A California man was bitten by a bear cub in his yard in an attempt to save his domestic pet from a wildlife attack. The man was taken to the hospital with non-threatening life injuries. The dog is safe and sound as is the bear which was taken down by law enforcement officers and will be moved back into the woods.

This is a reminder to homeowners, especially those with pets, that wildlife are out-and-about looking for food. Bears cannot be deterred by traditional fencing. The best bear management strategy is to install electric fencing

Bears wake from winter hibernation in March (even as early as February) and they scout lawns and gardens for food. Bear sightings are most common in August when summertime crops are abundant on landscapes.
