How Big Are Ticks?

Jennifer Smith

Posted on May 03 2019

We call ticks bugs; but ticks can range in sizes from the size of a dime to as small as a pen point. Without doing a thorough examination of the body after recreational time outside, it may be hard to determine whether that "birth mark" on the skin is natural or is an embedded tick.

The CDC tweeted a picture last year of a poppyseed muffin to show web visitors the importance of close examination of ticks. Was the muffin infused with ticks or poppyseeds? The picture was to drill the point that ticks can be as small as a black dot!

May is prime season for tick activity and spring is when ticks are widely seen in gardens; on hiking trails; camping sites; and other woods/grassy areas.
