Explaining Gauge Numbers

The question that seems to arise most frequently when looking at metal fence materials is which gauge is stronger? Defining fence gauge isn't as clear as it sounds; but with our help, we'll make it crystal.

Gauge sizes are numbers that indicate the thickness of a piece of sheet metal, with a higher number referring to a thinner sheet. This means that the higher the number of gauge, the thinner the material will be for fence mesh, posts, and any other type of metal construction. Example: 14 gauge welded wire is stronger than 20 gauge steel hex web. This has nothing to do with PVC-coating and all to do with the steel core.

This unit of thickness is important to learn when shopping for metal fence supplies and is easy to see when held up against other metal materials.
