Top Deer Control Methods

There are over 40 million white-tailed deer roaming throughout North America; and while growers would love to see deer gone, there is only so much that can be done to control the deer overpopulation. Here are the top deer control methods:

Deer culling

Organized deer culls are arranged to remove deer from a region using lethal measures. The act is favored by hunters that would rather see the deer meat go to food banks and other worthy causes. However, with the over-abundance of deer, many wonder if deer culls are effective at all.

Deer Repellents/Animal Urine

Applying deer repellents and deer predator urine to yards is a short-term solution but it requires maintenance every 2-4 weeks. This initial investment of deer repellents is cost-effective for gardeners; however it will leave gardeners frustrated when the products do not live up to standards. They are recommended as a secondary layer of protection around a deer fence.

Deer Fence Installation

Installing deer fence is the most effective means for deer control if the fence is at least 7.5' tall. While deer culling and deer repellents are a good short-term solution, they aren't effective in the long-run. Having a deer fence surrounding properties and home gardens will keep deer at bay for up to 30 years.
