Plants Rabbits Hate!

Like us, rabbits have their favorite foods (carrots, of course); and some they can live without. Gardeners can grow rabbit resistant plants to reduce the amount of bunnies hopping into gardens. Here are some plants that rabbits hate smelling and tasting:

  • Asparagus
  • Tomatoes
  • Leek
  • Potatoes
  • Onion
  • Lavender
  • Iris
  • Basil
  • Mint
  • Oregano
  • Tarragon
  • Parsley

Now, that's not to say rabbits won't take bites out of these flowers, vegetables and herbs; but they generally hate the taste and smell. The good news is that some of these plants are deer-resistant (such as basil, oregano and parsley); however, deer do love tomatoes and other fruits and vegetables; so, keep that in mind.

To protect plants from rabbit damage throughout the year, gardeners can install a hexagonal fence with PVC-coating that is at least 2-3' feet high. Since rabbits burrow, it is recommended to trench the fence at least 6 inches into the ground to block attempts to reach growing sites.
