Tree Protection In September

Jenn Smith

Posted on September 03 2019

Now that the fall season is officially around the corner, it's time to talk about protecting trees from wildlife, especially white-tailed deer.

The velvet on buck's antlers becomes increasingly uncomfortable throughout the summer months. It is heavy, distracting and not so attractive. To shed the growth, male deer find trees to rub against. Their mission isn't to damage trees; but unfortunately, this is a consequence of their actions. Therefore, tree growers will need to wrap trees to block shedding of the bark from deer.

It's really not their fault; and we know that deer are trying to look presentable to doe for deer mating season; but as gardeners, we need to be protective of our plants this September from wildlife with tree guards and other deer management tactics.
