Update On Longhorned Tick

Jennifer Smith

Posted on August 10 2018

The new invasive tick species from Asia, the Longhorned Tick, has been discovered in eight states including: Arkansas, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

This invasive tick aggressively attacks livestock animals and kills 15 percent of its victims.

"Ticks can be found in your own backyard, so it is essential to wear long sleeves and pants, use insect repellent containing DEET to help keep you safe from ticks and the diseases they carry," Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. "It is also important to check yourself and your pets for ticks, as pets can bring ticks indoors."

In addition to these health tips for tick disease prevention, homeowners are encouraged to use a deer fence around landscapes to keep away white-tailed deer and other tick carrying wildlife.
